by Mark Hefner (email richard10365@gmail.com)
Making the effort to blog is not going to be easy for me. I use to think of myself as technologically savvy. However, when I wasn't looking, people started blogging and now I find myself having to catch up to the craze.
I did try to avoid blogging. It was suggested to me to do this instead of making a newsletter. I prefer the newsletter better than a blog. Right now, I find doing a layout of a blog is a lot more restrictive than a newsletter. When I do the newsletter, I can put photos and text anywhere on the page I desire. On the blog, they have to go in a particular place. I suppose I will get use to it.
I figure the best way to become good at blogging is just to do it. So for the next few weeks my post might see a little erratic and strange but perhaps they will get better with time.
You might ask if I am so negative about blogging then why do I do it? The answer is because I am the communication officer for the ISU and the ISU president gave me the responsibility. I'm a bit older than my fellow classmates and ISU memebers (only by about 20 years). Hopefully, fullfilling my responsibilities will be a good example for them to fulfill their responsibilities.

Working on a policy stating how the lockers will be used. We need some help writing the policy before the proposal goes forward to request the funds to buy the lockers. Next Thursday is the deadline to have the policy.
Computer Policy for the ISU office
Should we have a policy for use of the official computer? Only the people in the ISU can use the computers. Official work only has priority over homework being done on the computer. We don’t need to write it down but it will be the policy.
Printing will be done by only ISU members. Non-ISU members will not be allowed to use the computer. We don’t want anything to happen to the computer. There is only one and we need to take care of it.

Here is a heads up to all of you new students...
Orientation is on Friday the 13th of June, it will be held in the auditorium starting at 9:00. This year IC Orientation is going to start off in the morning with the "Thai Side". This is the first year that Orientation for freshmen will be completely Bilingual, both in Thai and in English. This is also the first time where IC student are given an opportunity to get to know some Thai students that they may not get to know otherwise.
After the morning session with all of Payap, everyone will split off into their faculties. This is where the IC will come together as only the International Students. After that there will be a Lunch break and then you will split into smaller groups once again according to your Major. That should be the last split up there is... unless they decide to split you into Gender or Nationality or something... but I seriously doubt that will happen...
Anyways... I will see you all at Orientation on FRIDAY THE 13th... and don't worry Jason will not be there...

Payap University Marketing Blitz
by Mark Hefner
24 May, 2008
Chiang Mai, Thailand: Saturday morning Payap students and staff gathered at Kad Suang Khao shopping complex in order to promote Payap University. This weekend’s visit was part of a month long promotion by the university to target university bound students before the beginning of the school year next month.
What made this event special was the fact that it was the first time the International College (IC) and the Thai side of the university combined their forces to work together to promote Payap.
Led by the Thai Student Union (TSU) President and the university marketing department, Payap entertained and informed shoppers about the diverse educational opportunities at Payap University.
Upcoming International Student Union (ISU) president, Cameron Roberts, led the international student body in passing out leaflets and brochures about the different programs at Payap University International College.
Payap entertained the crowd with dancing, singing and jazz guitarist throughout the day. Bartender skills were even on display as one of Payap’s bartender student dazzled the crowd with amazing feats of bottle juggling, although, not without dropping a bottle a time or two. At times, large crowds stopped to enjoy the fun Payap brought to the shopping complex.
The fun continued Sunday as Payap University reached out to Chiang Mai citizens hoping to find a few more students in the shopping crowd. The president of Payap University, Rev. Dr. Pradit Takerngrangsarit, also showed up to support the universities efforts.
By Sunday evening Payap students gained a better understanding of face to face marketing and Chiang Mai gained a better understanding of Payap University.
Payap IC Baccalaureate 2008
by Mark Hefner
22 May, 2008
Chiang Mai, Thailand: For the second time in two years Payap friends, family, teachers and staff gathered to honor the upcoming graduates for year 2008. 8 students earning BA degrees and 2 earning MA degrees were honored in the Baccalaureate ceremony held in the library at Payap University on Friday afternoon.
If you find yourself asking “What is a Baccalaureate ceremony” don’t feel bad. On this day, 2 answers were common when asking people the purpose of this ceremony.
One answer, which seemed the most popular, was that since the official graduation was in November, it would be best to honor our graduates now as some of they might be departing for their home countries, new employment opportunities or some other destination far from the place of graduation.
The other answer had to do with an American tradition of separation of church and state. Most public graduations kept God out of the normal ceremony while Baccalaureate ceremonies were intended to make religious (mainly Christian) ceremonies God centered. This was a student led event and since students had the right to assemble, it was impossible to prohibit them from doing so.
This year’s ceremony started with song by the Payap University Music Department. Dr. Rux Prompalit followed by prayer and invited Aj. Dr. Sompan Wongdee to say a few words. Dr. Sompan read from the holy bible about how God told Jeremiah not to let his youth impede him from doing the work of the lord.
Rev. Dr. Esther Wakeman followed her comments with a small sermon on how single individuals can do extraordinary things with God’s help.
Following Dr. Wakeman, the Payap Music Department choral group stepped up sang a beautiful song in preparation for Rev. Dr. Pradit Takerngrangsarit.
Dr. Pradit talked about how the university could be compared to a house with many rooms representing the many different parts of the university. The IC had a room, although smaller than most, was still quite special.
That special room had a window that protruded from the house and looked out in three directions into the world. This would be the unique perspective the international students would have to the rest of the world. As well as the view the international students would provide the rest of the world on Thailand.
Thru their eyes and words will the world come to understand Thailand and why it is so special. The graduating students would carry on Payap’s motto of “Lives of Service” throughout the world.
These students would leave their own special mark on this room and later in life perhaps their children will return and see the legacy left behind by their parents.
After Dr. Pradit spoke, the music department performed once more and then Dr. Wakeman gave the benediction.
The ceremony ended with graduates humbling themselves before their parents to give thanks for their support in helping them achieve their educational dream.

Now with the elections over, given the fact that no-one really ran against us, we are starting to think about the new year. This is our first blog, so I'm not going to write anything BIG... but don't worry it will come.
